WSFA News - Mr. Bright goes to Washington
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Democrat Bobby Bright has won a narrow victory in southeast Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, giving his party a seat in the U.S. House that Republicans have held for 44 years.
Bright's opponent, Republican state Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery, conceded the race shortly before midnight Tuesday.
With 98 percent of the votes counted, Bright, the mayor of Montgomery, led by fewer than 1,800 votes but it was enough.
The win allows Democrats to pick up a seat in the U.S. House from Alabama and trim the GOP's margin in Alabama.
Republicans had held five of the seven seats, but that is now down to four to the Democrats' three.
