Will Grimm and Gibson Disavow Ted Cruz Money?

New York Congressmen Michael Grimm and Chris Gibson refuse to condemn their own party for fundraising tonight with a Texas Senator who led the charge to leave Hurricane Sandy victims in the lurch. As tonight’s fundraiser is expected to bring in money for the New York Republican Party, will Congressmen Grimm and Gibson disavow using any party money for their reelection campaigns?

Senator Ted Cruz voted to deny aid to New York victims and said the bill funded too many pork projects. Congressman Peter King said Tuesday that he doesn’t “think we should be acknowledging people who are voting against us in our hour of need.”

“Congressman Grimm and Congressman Gibson have been silent about whether it’s right for their party to fundraise with a Texas Senator who knocked the people of New York during their hour of need – so the question is whether they will use the money that Ted Cruz brings in,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “When New York families were struggling to rebuild, Senator Cruz turned a blind eye to his fellow Americans, but now Congressman Grimm and Congressman Gibson are poised to cozy up to him for campaign cash. Congressman Grimm and Congressman Gibson should do the right thing and disavow any money from the state party for their campaigns.”

  • Cruz Derided Funding for Sandy Relief as “Pork.” In a press release, Ted Cruz said: “This bill is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington – an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt.” [Sen. Ted Cruz Official Release, 1/28/13]

King: “If Ted Cruz Had Prevailed, My Constituents Would be Homeless.” “‘It's life and death,’ [said] King. ‘There were really false and phony charges made against the Sandy aid and if Ted Cruz had prevailed, my constituents would be homeless,’ he said.” [New York Daily News, 5/01/13]

Gov. Christie Said That House Republicans “Failed Most Basic Test of Leadership.” “Last night, the House majority failed most basic test of leadership and they did so with callous disregard to the people of my state… It was disappointing and disgusting to watch.” [CNN, 1/02/13]

King: “Anyone From New York or New Jersey who Contributes One Penny to Congressional Republicans is Out of Their Minds.” Appearing on Fox News’ American Newsroom, Peter King said: “These Republicans have no problem finding New York when they’re out raising millions of dollars. They’re in New York all the time filling their pockets with money from New Yorkers. I’m saying right now – anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to Congressional Republicans is out of their minds. What they did last night is put a knife in the backs of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans. It’s an absolute disgrace.” [Fox News Insider, 1/2/13]
