Statement from DCCC Chair Steve Israel on Colonel Ed Jany’s Campaign In FL-13

Colonel Ed Jany, a registered Democrat, announced today that he is running for Florida’s 13th Congressional District. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman  Representative Steve Israel issued the following statement:

“An American hero, Colonel Jany’s service, independence and proven ability to bring people together to get results is exactly what’s missing from the broken politics of Washington. Democrats are proud to support Colonel Jany and confident he will run an aggressive, successful campaign. Congressman David Jolly’s reckless Republican Congress is repelling Americans like Colonel Ed Jany who are fed up with the Republican agenda that hurts women, seniors and the middle class instead of focusing on solving challenges that matter most to Pinellas residents.”

In 2011, the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature passed a restrictive and partisan law targeting popular elected officials. It required candidates for all offices to be registered with the Party they are running under 365 days prior to qualifying (Fla. Stat. § 99.021). Colonel Ed Jany is a registered Democrat and has been for several months – and changed parties after the Republican Party left him and lost touch with Main Street values. Colonel Jany is required by this restrictive law to run as an NPA candidate in Florida’s 13th Congressional District, and is doing so with the full backing of the Democratic Party.
