Scandal-Plagued Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers Lawyers Up to Fight Ethics Investigation

Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers is already the focus of an ethics probe into her potentially illegal campaign activities, and a new report filed with the Federal Elections Commission reveals that McMorris Rogers has now hired high-priced Washington, DC lawyers to defend her.

“Instead of hiding behind high-priced lawyers, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers should come clean to Washington voters about her latest scandal and the extent of the investigation into her potentially illegal campaign activities,” said Josh Schwerin of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers might have finally shown her true colors if she decided that it was worth breaking the law in order to climb the D.C. ladder.”

Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers Paid Over $42,000 in Legal Fees. “McMorris Rodgers, the fourth-ranking Republican in the House, was under investigation for misusing taxpayer money for campaign related expenses. The Office of Congressional Ethics detailed her violations in a report, but the House Ethics Committee has not yet pressed forward with any additional investigation. According to her FEC report, McMorris Rodgers paid a total of $42,325 in legal fees over the first three months of this year to D.C.-based firm McGuireWoods.” [Washington Post, 4/15/14]

House Ethics Committee Investigating McMorris Rodgers For Potentially Mixing Taxpayer and Campaign Resources.  “The House Ethics Committee on Monday announced it will further investigate separate matters involving Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and freshman Rep. Markwayne Mullin. The allegations involving McMorris Rodgers, of Washington, involve claims by her former press secretary that she violated an obscure House rule against comingling campaign and taxpayer resources in her race for conference chair in late 2012.” [National Journal, 3/24/14]
