Representative Bachmann Just Canít Do the Simple Math of the Recovery Package

Bachmann Claims Economic Recovery Package Committed Enough to Give $1,430 to EVERYONE on Earth

As families across the country are struggling to make ends meet and businesses large and small are closing their doors, it has been determined that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's refusal to support the American Economic Recovery Package may be because she simply didn't understand the simple math behind this necessary and responsible legislation.  On KTLK's Chris Baker Show, Michele Bachmann claimed "The amount of money that's been committed by this Democrat government already, the amount of money that they have committed, your tax money to spend, would equal, and I'm not making this up, a check in the amount of $1,430 written to every man, woman, child in the world."

"If Congresswoman Bachmann is not ‘making this up,' then her calculator must be broken," said Gabby Adler, the Midwestern Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  "It is simply outrageous to claim the federal government under the leadership of President Barack Obama has, in thirty days, authorized enough spending to equal giving everyone in the world a check for $1,430.  Either Congresswoman Bachmann is trying to distort the numbers for political gain, or simply needs a lesson in basic division."

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will immediately jump-start the economy, create jobs, and help struggling families and communities.  The price tag for this package, $789 billion, is a far cry from Congresswoman Bachmann's accusation given the world population according to the U.S. Census Bureau exceeds 6,761,580,000.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann just doesn't get it.  No amount of lies and partisan distractions will change the fact that more than 3.6 million Americans have lost their jobs, the stock market has plummeted wiping out nearly $7 trillion stock market wealth and endangering thousands of investors' nest eggs, and one in 10 homeowners was delinquent on mortgage payments or was in foreclosure this fall.

While Congresswoman Bachmann was professing lies and showing off for right wing talk radio, Congress was hard at work addressing the challenges plaguing families in Minnesota and across the country.  In fact, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is expected to save or create 9,500 jobs in Bachmann's 6th District, the most of any congressional district in Minnesota.
