NY-19: Hudson Valley Republicans Nominate Nan Hayworth’s Reckless, Radical Agenda

This evening Hudson Valley Republicans selected Nan Hayworth to be their party’s nominee in New York’s 19th congressional district despite the fact that she is pushing a radical, anti-Seniors budget plan.  Over the course of her campaign, Hayworth has repeatedly touted a plan that would “end Medicare as we know it” and privatize Social Security benefits that seniors have earned. Both ideas are simply too radical and dangerous for the Hudson Valley’s seniors.

“Nan Hayworth’s dangerous and radical budget plans are wrong for New York’s seniors,” said Shripal Shah, Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  “Nan Hayworth’s plan would end Medicare as we know it and privatize Social Security benefits that seniors have earned, and that’s exactly what Hudson Valley seniors can’t afford right now.”

Throughout her campaign, Nan Hayworth has stated her support for the Paul Ryan “Roadmap for America,” which would privatize Social Security and dismantle and cut Medicare, forcing seniors to buy coverage from insurance companies. Hayworth says the Ryan plan is “excellent” and “courageous.” [Hayworth town hall, 6/15/10; Hayworth Remarks at Event, 5/08/10; Washington Post, 2/01/10; Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, “The Ryan Budget’s Radical Priorities,” 7/07/10]
