New RI-01 Poll Shows Strong Lead for Cicilline

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today released a new poll from the Benenson Strategy Group showing David Cicilline (RI-01) with a strong, 46-35 lead over Republican challenger Brendan Doherty, with Independent candidate David Vogel taking 8 percent.   Among the voters who are currently undecided in the head-to-head horserace, 45% say they would prefer a Democrat and 18% say they would prefer a Republican, a good sign for continued growth for Cicilline.

In this Presidential year, Doherty has an added burden of overcoming a top of the ticket that is losing badly.  President Obama currently leads Romney by 30 points, 61-31.  Both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are more unfavorable than favorable among voters, adding another serious obstacle to any Republican on the ballot with them.

“This Democratic district is solidifying behind David Cicilline and rejecting the Brendan Doherty’s Tea Party Republican agenda that chooses millionaires over Medicare and seniors,” said Josh Schwerin of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  “Brendan Doherty has to overcome the toxic nature of his party and his ticket mates as both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are very unpopular in the district.”
