McCain Slams Corrupt Politicians like Tom Feeney in Presidential Debate and “This Week” Appearance

At Friday night's Presidential debate and again during his appearance on ABC's This Week this morning, John McCain bashed the Republican Culture of Corruption and politicians like Representative Tom Feeney (FL-24) who is involved in an FBI investigation for his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"In the last few days, John McCain has repeatedly slammed the Culture of Corruption that Tom Feeney represents and is now apologizing for," said Kyra Jennings, Southern Regional Press Secretary at the DCCC.  "When the leader of the Republican Party is making a point to distance himself from Members like Tom Feeney, it shows just how much the people of Florida's 24th District deserve a leader who shares their priorities and will look out for them."

  • John McCain specifically mentioned Jack Abramoff during his appearance today on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos":

"I have a record of reform.  I took on the special interests.  I took on Abramoff who was a - a Republican establishment guy and the corruption.  He's now in jail." [ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, 9/28/08]
  •  John McCain spoke repeatedly about corruption in Washington and politicians under federal indictment and charges during Friday evening's Presidential debate:

"Somehow in Washington today -- and I'm afraid on Wall Street - greed is rewarded, excess is rewarded, and corruption -- or certainly failure to carry out our responsibility is rewarded." [Transcript of presidential debate, 9/26/08]

"We Republicans came to power to change government, and government changed us. And the -- the worst symptom on this disease is what my friend, Tom Coburn, calls earmarking as a gateway drug, because it's a gateway. It's a gateway to out-of-control spending and corruption." [Transcript of presidential debate, 9/26/08]

"I hear this all the time, ‘It's only $18 billion.' Do you know that it's tripled in the last five years? Do you know that it's gone completely out of control to the point where it corrupts people? It corrupts people.  That's why we have, as I said, people under federal indictment and charges." [Transcript of presidential debate, 9/26/08]
  • Tom Feeney is involved in an FBI investigation for ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Feeney joined Abramoff on a $160,000 golf junket to Scotland in 2003 and questions about what Feeney did in return for Abramoff remain unanswered. • Feeney's involvement in the Republican Culture of Corruption has been so politically disastrous for him that last week Feeney issued an "apology" ad that raised more questions than it answered. The ad can be viewed here:
