Martha McSally Refuses to Answer Questions About Her Shutdown Vote
One day into her official campaign, failed Congressional candidate Martha McSally is refusing to answer questions about whether she would shut down the government or stand with Arizona families. Yet again, on the biggest and most basic question facing public officials today, Martha McSally refused to offer any answers.
At the same time, Republican candidate Ed Martin has made it clear that he would continue to force a shutdown in an attempt to give health insurance companies free rein over Arizonans’ health care. Martin’s role model is controversial Senator Ted Cruz, who is currently in a public feud with Senator John McCain.
“Martha McSally is hiding from the voters, refusing to let southern Arizonans know whether she would have supported the reckless government shutdown,” said Matt Inzeo of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “And her primary opponent Ed Martin has staked out a clear position – he wants to give insurance companies free rein over health care, and he’s willing to shut down the government to push his agenda through—but at least he’s willing to be honest with Arizonans. Arizonans want to know: would Martha McSally recklessly vote with Washington Republicans in the shutdown?”
McSally Refused to Take a Position on the Government Shutdown. “Martha McSally made official today what many thought had been official for some time, announcing her candidacy for CD2 […] McSally, however, refused to answer questions from the media about how she would have voted on the continuing resolution that would have funded the government, but delayed the individual mandate requiring health insurance coverage by one year, according to one longtime political observer who was at the event. ‘For someone who is a leader, she’s sure slow to take a position,’ the source quipped. McSally’s campaign manager did not immediately return calls for comment.” [Yellow Sheet Report, 10/01/13]
Ed Martin Invoked Senator Ted Cruz as His Model. On September 27, 2013, Ed Martin, a southern Arizona Republican radio host and former horse-racing official announced that he will run for the 2nd Arizona congressional district. He said “he will run as an anti-establishment candidate and invoked as his model Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who is leading a charge to defund the president’s health care act using the threat of a government shutdown.” [Arizona Republic, 9/27/13]
Arizona Republic: “We Need the Republican Party to Rein in the Madness.” “We need a clean funding bill now. Then we need a debate on the budget unhampered by proxy fights over ‘Obamacare.’ Most of all, we need the Republican Party to rein in the madness. Sen. John McCain tried. He called out the firebrands on the futility of turning a routine funding bill into a proxy for continuing opposition to Obamacare. But the voice of reason failed. Normally level-headed Speaker John Boehner abdicated his role as resident House parent and joined the binge-happy tea drinkers. It’s time to sober up.” [Arizona Republic, 10/01/13]
