Ink Pad Drying: Rubber Stamps Resting in 2006

The Rubber Stamp Republican Congress Has Spent Their Time Raising Special Interest Money, Instead of Working for American Families

How the Republican Congress Spends Its Time
87 Hours Amount of time spent in session this month
88 Hours Amount of time spent raising special interest dollars this week
40+ Number of high dollar fundraisers this week
0 seconds Amount of time working for American families

(Washington, D.C.) – Reports indicate that Congress has convened for only 87 hours so far this month and is on track to spend less time than ever at work this year and despite their “do-nothing” approach to the people’s business, they are spending 88 hours raising special interest money this week alone. Congressional Republicans are holding more than 40 high dollar special interest fundraisers this week alone, a sign that not only are the special interests looking to thank the rubber stamp Republican Congress for all the giveaways but congressional Republicans have misplaced their priorities. A conservative estimate of the time spent at each of these fundraisers this week shows that Republicans in Congress will be raising special interest money for about as many hours as they have spent at work this entire month.

“The small time it takes to rubberstamp Bush’s agenda has really freed up this do-nothing Republican Congress for as many high dollar fundraisers as they can squeeze into one ‘work week’ in Washington,” said Bill Burton, communications director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “The bad news is that the Republican Congress is spending more time raising special interest money just this week than they’ve spent on the job this month. The good news is that when the Republican Congress is doing nothing, they also aren’t plunging our nation deeper into the deficit they’ve created, further alienating our allies around the world or rubberstamping more of President Bush’s failed initiatives.”

Do-Nothing Congress on Track to Do Less Than Ever. According to USA Today, “The House of Representatives is on track this year to be in session for fewer days than the Congress Harry Truman labeled as "do-nothing" during his 1948 re-election campaign.” The Congressional Record and the calendar set by the Republican leadership indicates that House members are on track to spend only 97 days in Washington this year, spent only 47 hours in the Capitol in the first two months of the year and only 87 hours at work in March.
