Kiehne, Kwasman, and Tobin Applaud as House Republicans Kill Immigration Reform

House Republicans are following up their disastrous government shutdown by killing the prospects for immigration reform for 2013. According to a report from Politico, Republican leaders are planning to prevent a vote by the full House on immigration reform, despite years of discussions and bipartisan passage of a bill in the U.S. Senate. Both of Arizona’s Republican U.S. Senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, voted for the bipartisan measure.

As House Republicans let another national problem fester, congressional candidates Gary Kiehne, Adam Kwasman, and Andy Tobin are all happy to see immigration reform die. Both Kiehne and Tobin oppose the Senate immigration bill and the billions in additional border security resources that it would provide Arizona, while Kwasman relies on Tea Party talking points as he opposes bipartisan reform.

“When Republican Senators like John McCain and Jeff Flake are willing to support comprehensive immigration reform, it only goes to show just how far outside the mainstream candidates like Gary Kiehne, Adam Kwasman, and Andy Tobin are with their opposition to a bipartisan fix to our broken immigration system,” said Matt Inzeo of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Gary Kiehne, Adam Kwasman, and Andy Tobin would prefer to recklessly make problems worse instead of working toward solutions, and it makes all three of them wrong for Arizona.”

Tobin Opposes Comprehensive Immigration Reform. “In 2013, Tobin said “he doesn't think comprehensive immigration reform needs to include a path to citizenship, but instead should offer temporary legal residence for workers. As part of that plan, he believes Congress needs some way to track those in the country. ‘The answer continues to be the same,’ he said. ‘We need a licensing vehicle so we know who is here.’” [Arizona Republic, 1/29/13]

Kwasman: “I Oppose Amnesty in Any Form.” In 2013, Kwasman had written on his website: “I oppose amnesty in any form. We must do everything necessary to secure the border and end illegal immigration. Arizona’s illegal immigration problem is a threat to national security, and Washington has failed in protecting our citizens. We must defend the citizens of this state.” [Adam Kwasman Campaign Website, accessed 4/03/13]

Kiehne Opposes Bipartisan Senate Immigration Bill. In 2013, Gary Kiehne stated on his website that he “does not support the so-called ‘Gang of 8’ bill that provides a special path to citizenship for those who chose to break our laws and come to our country” and that he only supports “legal immigration for those who abide by our current immigration laws and temporary work-permits when there is a real and verifiable shortage of workers.” [Gary Kiehne Campaign Website, accessed 10/25/13]
