Heck On Unemployment Benefits: With Nevadans or Sharron Angle?

As Nevada continues to grapple with record rates of unemployment and out-of-work Nevadans face uncertainty over future unemployment benefits, the question is: where’s Senator Joe Heck?

Does he agree with his party’s standard-bearer candidate, Sharron Angle, that extending unemployment benefits makes people "afraid" to find a job?  Does Heck agree with Angle that Nevadans can make more money through unemployment benefits than with a job?  And does he think Angle’s right that Nevadans are "spoiled" by unemployment benefits?

"As Nevadans continue digging out of the economic mess caused by the Bush-era policies Senator Joe Heck is anxious to return to, does Heck support extending unemployment benefits for Silver State residents?" asked Andy Stone, Western Regional Press Secretary from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  "Or does Heck agree with his party’s standard-bearer candidate, Sharron Angle, that unemployment benefits spoil residents and make them afraid to find a job?"

  • Sharron Angle told Face to Face host Jon Ralston the other night when asked whether she’d support an unemployment benefit extension under consideration in the Senate, “I would have voted no, because the truth about it is that they keep extending these unemployment benefits to the point where people are afraid to go out and get a job…” [Face to Face with Jon Ralston, 6/29/10]
  • Angle told KRNV-TV in Reno, “…you can make more money on unemployment than you can going down and getting one of those jobs that is an honest job, but it doesn’t pay as much. … we really have spoiled our citizenry.” [The Hill, 6/22/10]
