Earth to Representative Mike Coffman: Republicans Responsible for Sky-High Deficits
In an address to a joint session of Congress last night, President Barack Obama reiterated his bold pledge to cut the national deficit in half by the end of his first term.
Apparently, that wasn't enough for freshman Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO-06) who told KUSA-TV in Denver, "Certainly I wish [Obama had] been more aggressive in stopping out of control deficit spending, cutting the deficit in half in four years is a little like having a chronic alcoholic cutting their drinking in half, it doesn't get us there, we need a balanced budget."
"Congressman Coffman needs a history lesson," said Andy Stone, Western Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "It was former President Bush and Congressional Republicans that left Americans with deficits as far as the eye could see, taking a $5.6 trillion surplus and transformed it into a $3.2 trillion deficit."
The Bush Administration's 2009 budget will leave the country with a $482 billion deficit, trumping only its previous record of $413 billion set in 2004. All five of the largest deficits in our nation's history occurred on the Bush Administration's watch.
