DCCC Chairman Steve Israel’s Statement on MLK Day
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel
released the following statement on today’s celebration of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
“Today Americans join together to celebrate the life of one of our nation’s
most prolific and powerful advocates for justice, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
and to recommit ourselves to his life’s mission - ensuring that we live up to the
promises laid out in our Declaration of Independence. A half-century later, we
are still a long way from true equality of opportunity for all, and we must continue to
work to make Dr. King’s dream a reality by ensuring that no man or woman is
discriminated against and every American has an equal voice.
“Last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s eloquent call to action,
reflecting on the positive steps we have taken, and challenging ourselves to do more
to be forever vigilant in the cause of equality and justice. Dr. King once said, 'Life's most
persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?’ House Democrats remain
committed to standing up and answering that question proudly as we work to
live up to our nation’s founding promise of opportunity and justice for all.”
