DCCC Chairman Steve Israel Statement on Republican Leadership and Immigration

Democratic Congressional Campaign Chairman Steve Israel issued the following statement in response to news that House Leadership has told their members that they will not be considering bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform this year:

“The day after John Boehner threatened to use taxpayer money to sue the President over immigration reform, we learn the Speaker has officially killed any hope of bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform this year. House Republicans’ priorities couldn’t be more clear; they are staunchly opposed to doing anything that could help the middle class and would prefer to spend their time and the taxpayers’ money on reckless political stunts that will only exacerbate the Congressional dysfunction that the country already detests.”

Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., that his bill would not be considered this year. Diaz-Balart has been the main Republican responsible for crafting the House version of an immigration overhaul […]But after meeting with House leadership on Thursday morning, he says he was told the end had come.” [USA Today, 7/10/14]
