DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollenís Statement on the August Jobs Report
DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on today's news that America's unemployment rate climbed to 6.1%, its highest level in five years:
"George Bush's economic policies have now caused more than half a million jobs to disappear in 2008 and America's unemployment rate to climb to its highest level in five years. Yet despite their attempt to rebrand their party at the Republican Convention this week, John McCain, Sarah Palin, and their Republican allies in Congress didn't say a word about what they would do differently to turn our economy around.
"Under the same Bush record that John McCain describes as progress, we've seen steep job losses across all sectors of our economy, home values are plummeting, and families are paying more for gas, groceries, and health care.
"With John McCain, Sarah Palin, and their Republican allies in Congress promising more of the same economic policies, families need only to consider whether they are better off today than they were eight years ago. Barack Obama, Joe Biden and more House Democrats on the other hand stand ready to take our country in a New Direction."
