DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollenís Statement on Representative John Tannerís Decision to Retire

DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on Congressman John Tanner’s (TN-08) decision to retire from Congress at the end of his current term:

"For two extraordinary decades in Congress, Representative John Tanner has been an unyielding advocate for the best interests of the families of west and middle Tennessee.

“As Member of the Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Tanner has been a voice for fiscal discipline and a steadfast opponent of privatizing Social Security. As President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, he has strengthened America’s work with our allies at a time of unprecedented security challenges. As a founding Member of the Blue Dog Caucus, his commitment to ensuring fiscal responsibility will be his proud legacy.

“We are confident that a Democrat who shares Congressman John Tanner’s determination to bringing bipartisan, commonsense solutions for Tennessee’s families will succeed him as the next Representative of Tennessee’s 8th District.

“On behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, we wish John and Betty Ann Tanner and their entire family a happy and healthy retirement.”
