Minnesota State Senator Dick Day 'Looking for Hobbies'

Last week, Dick Day (R) announced that he will run against Congressman Tim Walz (MN-01) in 2008.

"A year from now, we'll probably get into the heavy issues that are out there.” Mr. Day said, on a Minnesota Public Radio interview with Tom Scheck. When asked why he was running Mr. Day responded, “I don’t have a lot of hobbies.”

Apparently Mr. Day isn’t aware that Members of Congress deal with heavy issues every day. On January 17, 2,600 Minnesota Guard members who have been serving in Iraq since March and were recently told they were scheduled to return home abruptly had their tours of duty extended as part of the troop surge ordered by President Bush.

“While Dick Day is looking for hobbies Congressman Walz is hard at work on behalf of the brave men and women in the Minnesota Guard,” Said Jennifer Crider, Communications Director at the Democratic National Campaign Committee. “Congressman Walz, other Members of the Minnesota’s congressional delegation and Governor Tim Pawlenty sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates requesting hardship pay for the Minnesota Guardsmen and additional resources to help the families. Congressman Walz is standing up for American troops. Unfortunately, Dick Day seems to be sitting this debate out.”
