Chairman Chris Van Hollen’s Statement on the 73rd Anniversary of Social Security
"For 73 years, Social Security has meant independence and a dignified retirement for generations of America's seniors.
"When President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act he said that it, ‘represents a cornerstone in a structure which is being built, but is by no means complete.' President Bush, Senator John McCain, Republican Members, and Republican candidates continue their fight to privatize Social Security. Senator John McCain's recent comments calling Social Security an ‘absolute disgrace' remind us that preserving this cornerstone requires continued vigilance.
"House Democrats renew our commitment to fight fiercely to protect and strengthen the guaranteed safety net that Social Security provides 42 million American seniors. Today's worsening economic squeeze on families underscores the stakes in this fight."
