Andy Tobin Faces Massive Blowback for Fundraising Off Benghazi

Andy Tobin has been facing massive blowback since he exploited a national tragedy to line campaign coffers by fundraising at least four separate times off of the attacks in Benghazi. The criticism culminated in a Sunday editorial from the Arizona Republic that highlighted how Tobin’s campaign “did not directly respond to criticism of the tactic” and that his lack of a response was “telling.”

See some of the coverage about Andy Tobin’s controversial fundraising strategy:

Huffington Post: House Republican Candidate Fundraising Off Of Benghazi Investigation

“As House Republicans begin the process of staffing and defining the scope of a select committee to investigate the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, party leaders are trying their best to avoid the appearance of partisanship. So it doesn't necessarily help the GOP's effort that just days after the committee's formation a Republican candidate for the U.S. House is trying to raise funds on it.” [Huffington Post, 5/06/14]

Tucson Weekly: Tobin Cites Benghazi in Fundraising Pitch

“Tobin’s pitch comes against the advice of House Select Committee on Benghazi chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), who says he has ‘never sought to raise a single penny on the backs of four murdered Americans.’” [Tucson Weekly, 5/07/14]

POLITICO: Trey Gowdy to GOP: No Benghazi fundraising

“Andy Tobin, the speaker of the Arizona state House of Representatives who is challenging Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick for the congressional seat for the state’s first district, came under fire on Tuesday for a fundraising email he sent to supporters that invoked the Benghazi attacks.” [POLITICO, 5/07/14]

Arizona Republic: Andy Tobin cites Benghazi probe in fundraising plea

“Two other Tobin campaign e-mails soliciting donations in recent weeks and obtained by The Arizona Republic also mentioned Benghazi when asking for donations. The day after Tobin’s e-mail, the chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, warned Republicans to "not raise a single penny off the backs of four murdered Americans.” [Arizona Republic, 5/09/14]

Arizona Republic: Tobin Fundraised off of Benghazi

“Andy Tobin was quick to hit the fundraising trail after the U.S. House created a select committee to investigate the embassy attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Residents of Congressional District 1, he said in a letter to supporters, need a representative ‘who will always seek to uncover the truth.’” [Arizona Republic, 5/10/14]

Arizona Republic Editorial: What we learned from 3 fund-raising snafus

“State House Speaker Andy Tobin has invoked Benghazi at least four times in fund-raising messages for his congressional campaign, despite admonitions from national GOP leaders to Republicans not to do so. His campaign did not directly respond to criticism of the tactic[…]But how candidates respond to a mistake ... that’s the telling thing. ” [Editorial, Arizona Republic, 5/12/14]
