DCCC Chairman Steve Israel’s Statement on Congressman Runyan’s Retirement in NJ-03
DCCC Chairman Steve Israel released the following statement after Congressman Jon Runyan announced his retirement in New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional district. Congressman Runyan is now the 14th House Republican to leave the House in 2014.
“Congressman Jon Runyan saw the writing on the wall in the Virginia governor’s race: Swing voters want no part of the reckless and irresponsible agenda that House Republicans have been pushing for years. Congressman Runyan is the 14th House Republican to bail from Speaker Boehner’s sinking ship, and his retirement makes this swing district even more competitive.
“The voters of New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District will have a chance in 2014 to elect a problem-solving Democrat in this toss-up district that President Obama won twice and that sent Democrats to represent them in the U.S. Senate.”
Background on NJ-03:
- President Obama won a majority of the vote across the district in 2008 (51.7% of the vote) and again in 2012 (52.3%).
- In 2012, Senator Menendez carried the district with 52.6 percent of the vote and the late Senator Frank Lautenberg carried the district in 2008 with 50.5 percent of the vote.
