Barbara Comstock:  Wrong on Teachers, Transportation and Transvaginal Ultrasounds

Barbara Comstock’s brand of extremely dysfunctional politics represents everything that Northern Virginians hate about the dysfunctional politics of Congress. Comstock’s relentless focus on the most divisive issues at the expense of growing the economy or strengthening the middle class would make the gridlock in Congress even worse.

Comstock’s announcement today sets the stage for a race to the right in the Republican primary, as potential candidates will be forced to align themselves with the most extreme fringe of their party that was responsible for the shutdown of our nation’s government.

“Barbara Comstock’s record of prioritizing her own dysfunctional and extreme agenda instead of focusing on solving problems is exactly what Virginians hate about Congress and her divisive agenda would only make things worse for Virginia’s middle class families,” said David Bergstein of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Each candidate in this costly and divisive Republican primary will be forced to align themselves with the most dysfunctional fringe of their party that was responsible for the government shutdown.”

Consider just three T’s of Comstock’s record – Transportation, Teachers, and Transvaginal Ultrasounds:

  • Transportation – Washington Post: Comstock “Thumb[ed] Her Nose” at Solution to Rush Hour Misery. In 2013, a Washington Post editorial criticized Comstock and others for voting against the transportation compromise, “thumbing their noses at the first politically feasible solution to rush-hour misery.” [Editorial, Washington Post, 3/03/13]
  • Teachers – Comstock Voted Against a Pay Increase for Teachers. In 2013, Comstock voted against a budget bill that included a two percent salary increase for teachers and support positions. The bill also included $8.6 million for in-state undergraduate financial aid, along with $3 million to increase Tuition Assistance Grants. [Martinsville Bulletin, 2/24/13; HB 1500, 2/23/13]
  • Transvaginal Ultrasounds – Comstock Voted to Require Transvaginal Ultrasounds Prior to Abortions. In 2012, Comstock voted for a bill “that requires women to have a ‘transvaginal ultrasound’ before undergoing abortions.” [HB 462, 2/14/12; Associated Press, 2/15/12]
